Nikon Coolpix S1 "Card Cannot Be Read/Card Cannot Be Used" Error Message and Troubleshooting

Explanation in detail of one of the strangest problems I have ever seen on a camera. If anyone's got any ideas as to how to fix this or what causes it, please let me know, it's got me stumped:

1. Camera's menus and dialog boxes are graphically screwed up and navigable, but just about unusable without some kind of reference.
2. Camera always boots to a "card cannot be read" error when it is started without a card.
3. Pictures don't actually save unless the card is inserted after the camera has booted and displayed the error.

Thanks for watching.

Sand Boy : I´ve solved the problem. After buying 25 differets cards, and still not working, i´ve tried with an hammer...and now is fine :)
lolololois66 : i had nikon s6300 for 3 months & experienced error message "memory card write protected". didnt have that problem until 3 months later. lock button wasnt locked. tried 3 different memory cards & same message. i decided to google error and low and behold many people had the same problem. i took camera back to store cause i had no use for it. i couldnt get past the error on screen. took memory card out & it took 1 pix because thats all internal memory would hold. think its a default with coolpix.
Dee Silver : i have a cool pix aw110 and I've had to reformat the media card three times losing awesome picstures....(my fiancé proposing, my daughter's 2 bday and other stuff.)  i don't know why.  I have purchased other media cards, but it still does it.  i can't find the receipt to have it checked.  what do you suggest?
Kristine Karole Therese A. Flores : I have a Nikon Coolpix S3300 and I don't want to reset my camera because it has all the pictures I took with my grandpa (who had passed away last september) and I had the same problem when I record videos. I can't get a new card at the moment because my parents are paying their bills and I have a youtube schedule to post once a week and I can't skip that. Any tips?
lolololois66 : no. i took camera back to store after i read numerous of people with same problem and no solution. every memory card i inserted it did that. couldnt take pix nor go into menu options because it wouldnt let you get past the error message. im currently looking for another camera. i have a cruise coming up. do you know of any good cameras?

Dan Wells : Interesting review, those pictures really gave the illusion they were taken 25 years ago. No photoshop filter required.
lim2001burger : Another great video :) love how inventive the camera manufacturers had to be in the early days. I know that type of thinking didn’t pan out for Nikon with their keymission 80, but it’s a shame that the camera form factors don’t get that interesting these days. The closest contemporary for that camera now would be the DJi pocket series...I mean apart from phones
Rudy Reimer : Cool stuff doing retro reviews. I still have my first digital camera purchased in 1997/1998. It’s a Nikon 995. It was awesome for its time. Got filters and other accessories that made it fun to use. I was the first grad student at my university to use digital pics in my thesis. Keep up the great content!
Peter Osvath : I love your reviews - they take me down memory lane!! My first digital camera was a Kodak DC120. Shaped like a chocolate box (interesting how there were all sorts of odd designs almost as if they wanted to differentiate digital cameras from analogue by deliberately shaping them differently - my next digital camera was the Nikon Coolpix 950 that had a two part pivoting body). The DC120 was advertised as the first camera under $1,000 with more than 1,000 pixels. Ironically I think it had slightly fewer than 1000 pixels and cost more than $1,000 (in Australia anyway!) It had a frustrating proprietary Kodak RAW file format that almost nothing these days can read!!
Dennis Fang : I actually love the look of the images. I really do think that one day, the retro digital camera look will have the same appreciation as the disposable film camera look that is so popular right now

Som ANet : Excellent Video. Wonder Why These Camera Companies with Legions of Marketing/Sales people can't come up with even half as decent. Thank you Sir, Appreciate your hard work in creating this and sharing for the newbies.
Ken Miers : Amazing tutorial . Played with my camera for days and learnt more in 30 minutes watching you . Nikon owes you big time
Patrick Martin : Best tutorial on the web for beginners, the technically impaired or those of us who have a hard time reading instructions of which I am all three. Found out how to use my new P1000 more in thirty minutes here than after spending hours with the included instructions. Thank you so much!
Dennis Wilson : Best purchase I've made and now, I can make sense of it all. Thank you for taking the time to explain it all.
Paula Campbell : Really helpful-especially about the scene mode. I have been using a Canon Rebel for years taking great shots off of the back of a motorcycle, using the sports mode. I was really worried when I bought the Nikon, and saw no sports setting on the top dial. I know now that I can get to the sports setting through the scene mode. Thanks!
